Scope and Contents
This collection contains two copies of "The History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Alabama Prior to 1826," a thirty-six page, 1904 reprint of the Reverend James H. B. Hall article that originally appeared in the Transactions of the Alabama Historical Society. Both copies include Hall's handwritten notes.
The first few pages of the notebook include a handwritten account of Hall's sermons and revival participation from September 1886 through May 1887. It includes attendance notes and brief comments on sermons and congregation descriptions. The remainder of the notebook contains a selection of poems and short stories written and/or copied by Hall's daughter Myra.

Biographical / Historical
James H.B. Hall, son of Sylvester Young and Alazannah Blair Hall, was born in east Tennessee on 22 September 1855. After completing his studies at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, Hall moved to Alabama in August 1878, where he taught at a number of institutions, including the Helena Collegiate Institute, Highland High School, and Pleasant Hill Academy. In addition, Hall was also an evangelist and served as the pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Winchester, Tennessee. He married Emma C. Gardener on 23 July 1882 in Montevallo, Alabama; the couple had one daughter, Mignon Myra. In 1903, Hall was appointed to serve as the Synodical Historian of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and compiled a record of the church's history which was published in 1904. Hall died on 12 April 1936 in Birmingham, Alabama.
