Scope and Contents
This 270-page manuscript includes handwritten definitions and summaries of legal cases tried between 1869 and 1877. Although the cases described were primarily tried in Alabama district courts, the manuscript also includes descriptions of cases tried in South Carolina. The case descriptions primarily relate to railroad interests and personal property law.

Biographical / Historical
Robert H. Smith was a prominent lawyer and politician in the Mobile, Alabama, area in the mid-nineteenth century. Born in Camden County, North Carolina, on 21 March 1813, he was a member of the Alabama Legislature in 1849 and then a member of the Alabama State Senate in 1851. Between 1861and 1862 he served as a delegate from Alabama to the Confederate Provisional Congress. He was also a colonel in the Confederate Army. He was a candidate for representative from Alabama in the Confederate Congress ninth district in 1863. Smith died in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama, on 13 March 1878.

Originally the notebook was probably a hardbound journal but the individual signatures were removed from the bindings and separated, most likely after having been written.
