Scope and Contents

The collection includes two manuscripts for the book Banking in Alabama, 1816-1860,volume 2, written by William H. Brantley Jr. Volume 2 covers the history of banking in the state from 1837 to 1849; it is part of a two-volume work. One manuscript, in a three-ring binder, is 362 pages long. This is an early draft of the work, as it contains handwritten edits that are reflected in the carbon copy manuscript. The carbon copy manuscript, in an expansion binder, is 371 pages long.

William H. Brantley Jr. wrote both volumes, but he passed away before publication of the second volume. His children edited the volume and published it in 1967. The first volume was published in 1961.

Biographical / Historical

William H. Brantley Jr. was born in Troy, Alabama, in 1898. He attended The University of Alabama and Harvard Law School and was one of the founding partners of the Birmingham law firm Lange, Simpson, and Brantley. He served as the president of the Alabama Historical Association from 1953-1954 and was one of the charter members of the organization. He died in 1964.
