Jack D. L. Holmes papers

 Collection
Identifier: W-0001

Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, journal articles, newspaper clippings, and maps of this professor and author. The correspondence is primarily between Arrow Printing Company and Holmes about his book, Honor and fidelity; the Louisiana Infantry Regiment and the Louisiana militia companies, 1766-1821. Most of the articles, papers, and newspaper clippings relate to his research on the early history of the Gulf Coast States, specifically Dauphin Island, Alabama, and Louisiana.

One manuscript is in Spanish and is a compilation of approximately ten Spanish documents, edited by Holmes and published in 1963. The documents relate to the settlement of Louisiana, and include a description of the territory written by Governor Esteban Miro and a diary written by Governor Manuel Gayoso de Lemos.

Another manuscript is a typescript copy of Holmes's English translation (done in 1980) of "Spanish New Orleans and Louisiana" by Jose Montero de Pedro and Marques de Casa Mena, published in October 1979 by the Centro de Cooperations Iberoamericana.
