Biographical / Historical

The Tuscaloosa branch of the American Association of University Women was officially recognized in November 1920. Throughout its history the parent organization has sought to unite alumnae of colleges and universities to concentrate and increase their effectiveness in formulating and implementing solutions to the cultural, educational, legislative, and social needs of the community, the state, and the nation.

The local chapter actively promotes high educational standards and works for gender equity. The Tuscaloosa AAUW awards several scholarships and offers a concert and lecture series that has introduced members of the community to notable women such as Amelia Earhart, Eve Currie, and Dr. Margaret Meade. The association encourages community action through cooperative efforts with local charities, lobbies national and state legislators, and supports heightened awareness of international affairs by hosting forums.
