Scope and Contents
The collection contains a letter from C. L. Clawson of Nation Ford (near Fort Mill), South Carolina, to his cousin Isaiah Clawson in Woodstown, New Jersey, in 1850. The letter is filled with family news and talk of growing cotton in Alabama versus in South Carolina. He also goes into some detail about their ancestors, particularly those of his cousin, and the preponderance of scriptural names in the family. He adds in a post script that he was married on the 11th of January in Montgomery, Alabama, in the presence of "the Governor of Ala., and many grave senators."

Biographical / Historical
C. L. (Charles Lewis) Clawson, son of Jacob Harris and Mary Ann Thomasson Clawson, was born on December 10, 1819, in York, South Carolina. By 1850 he was a physician in the Fort Mill area of South Carolina and had married Sarah (Sallie) Ogdon Williams, daughter of Thomas Williams Jr. and Martha White Crawford Williams on January 11, 1850, in Montgomery Alabama. The couple had four children: Thomas William, William Isaiah, Martha, and Mary Elizabeth. Sallie Clawson died in 1881. Clawson married Mary Belle McClintoch, daughter of Joseph Campbell and Mary Morris McClintoch, in 1892, in York, South Carolina. Mary Belle had three children by Clawson: Jacob Harris, Lucy Belle, and Alice C.
Clawson was a land owner, cotton farmer, and a physician. He died in Richburg, South Carolina, on March 27, 1909.
