Scope and Contents

The James J. and Mabel Cowart Doster papers contain documents created and gathered by this University of Alabama, College of Education the dean and his wife. Dr. Doster received degrees from three institutions and taught in various institutions, including The University of Alabama. The collection includes notes and other working materials he created as both student and professor. In addition to his and his wife's personal materials, the collection also includes documents his father, Simeon Doster, created, and materials created by her family.

The collection is arranged in to the following series: Education, Correspondence, Subject Files, Financial, Photographs, South American Trip, Publications, Mabel Doster, Simeon Doster, Publications, and Cowart Family. Dr. Doster created most of the materials in the collection.

Biographical / Historical

James Jarvis Doster was born December 20, 1873, in Ariosto, Dale County, Alabama, to Simeon J. and Sarah Tucker Doster. He attained the following degrees: Phd., State Normal College (now Troy University), 1902; BS and AM, Columbia University, 1906 and 1909; and LLD, University of Alabama, 1917.

Before he graduated from college at Troy, he taught in Dale County public schools and was principal of the college’s training school. He joined the faculty of The University of Alabama as a professor of secondary education in 1907. He served as dean of the School of Education at The University of Alabama from 1911 to 1928 when it became the College of Education. He remained as dean of the College of Education until his death in 1942.

In August 1909 he married Mabel Cowart of Troy. They had one child, James Fletcher Doster, in 1912.
