Biographical / Historical

Jennie B. Scott, third child and second daughter of Willis M. and Emma Bailey Calcote of Mississippi, was born on February 15, 1879. She married Fletcher Eugene Scott (son of Albert W. and Patience Timothy Scott) around the turn of the century. The couple lived in Mississippi and Tennessee and raised two daughters, Rosa B. (married Louisheo Alexander) and Ruth Teresa (married Ray S. Dokes).

Fletcher died in Memphis on November 11, 1933. Sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s, Jennie's sister Rosa (referred to as Doll in the diaries) moved in with her. Then in December 1959, the two of them moved to Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, to live with Jennie's daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Ray Dokes (referred to in the diaries as R.T. and R. S.). Jennie died in Tuskegee, on June 16, 1965, eighteen days after the last entry in her journal where she wrote, "Sat. [May] 28: Bit of cloud. No rain here. Nice - cool. R.T. & R.S. rode out. God care for us all is my prayer."
