John H. Jones, son of Arthur A. and Anne Skegg Jones, was born on August 8, 1911, in Summerville, Georgia. Before the outbreak of World War II, Jones was secretary/treasurer of his father's companies Jones Coal Co. and Decatur Fertilizer Co. He enlisted in the Army and was able to enter as a lieutenant. His first year was spent in various bases from West Virginia to California to Texas. In January 1945, he was sent overseas to India and then to China. When he returned to the States he resumed to the Jones Coal Co. and Decatur Fertilizer Co. He also worked for the North Alabama Broadcasting Co. and the Jones-Riggs Insurance Agency.

At some point after that Jeffie met John, probably while he was stationed at Fort Ord in California. They corresponded almost daily while he was overseas, and married after he returned stateside. They lived in Decatur, Alabama. Jeffie died on January 297, 1966, and John died on April 9, 1977.
