Scope and Contents

The collection contains letters from John H. (Sonny, Bub) Jones to his parents, his girlfriend Jeffie McCoy, as well as letters from her to him, while he was in the U. S. Army during World War II. There is also a good sized collection of photographs, many of which were taken during his tour of duty in India and China during World War II.

Biographical / Historical

John H. Jones, son of Arthur A. and Anne Skegg Jones, was born on August 8, 1911, in Summerville, Georgia. Before the outbreak of World War II, Jones was secretary/treasurer of his father's companies Jones Coal Co. and Decatur Fertilizer Co. He enlisted in the Army and was able to enter as a lieutenant. His first year was spent in various bases from West Virginia to California to Texas. In January 1945, he was sent overseas to India and then to China. When he returned to the States he resumed to the Jones Coal Co. and Decatur Fertilizer Co. He also worked for the North Alabama Broadcasting Co. and the Jones-Riggs Insurance Agency.

Jeffie Beckham McCoy Jones, daughter of Elvin M. and Maggie M. Beckham, was born in Texas on January 18, 1905. She graduated from Coquille High School and Oregon Normal School. She married Thomas K. McCoy on September 1, 1924, a bookkeeper in The Dalles, Oregon. McCoy died on January 21, 1942.

At some point after that Jeffie met John, probably while he was stationed at Fort Ord in California. They corresponded almost daily while he was overseas, and married after he returned stateside. They lived in Decatur, Alabama. Jeffie died on January 297, 1966, and John died on April 9, 1977.
