Scope and Contents

The collection contains the World War I diary, banquet programs and menus, uniform insignia, and miscellaneous medals of Charles S. Goodrich, a veteran of the 167th Infantry, part of the Rainbow Division. The diary begins as more of a memoir but changes to daily entries in June 1918. Also included in the collection are two banquet programs and menus. One is for a Peace Parley and Banquet in the Hotel Rheingold on January 30, 1919, honoring the Medical Department, 167th Infantry, 42nd (Rainbow) Division. The other is the seventh annual Armistice Banquet of the Martimer H. Jordan Chapter of the Rainbow Division Veterans, held on November 11, 1925, at the Tutwiler Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama. The collection also contains several pieces of uniform insignia as well as a Red Cross arm band with thirteen buttons and two ribbons attached. There is also a 3" x 3" snapshot of an unidentified man.

Biographical / Historical

Charles S. Goodrich, son of Joseph M. and Clara J. Goodrich, was born on January 17, 1892, in Alabama. He enlisted in the army on June 29, 1916, and served in the 167th Infantry, part of the Rainbow Division. He spent time in France and saw active duty in at least four major engagements. He received his honorable discharge on May 19, 1919. After returning to Alabama, Goodrich married Mayme Frances Bates in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 3, 1920. The couple had one daughter, Frances.

Goodrich died on December 25, 1955, in Birmingham.
