Doris then moved to New York and attended Columbia University, specializing in communications. She worked for RFD America and was the programming associate for the Quiz Kids Radio Show.

In 1950, Doris married Reuben A. "Pete" Osten. In 1957, Doris, Pete, and daughter Katherine left California for Europe where Pete worked for Dupont. They moved to Dupont's headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. They moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1995, to enjoy their retirement. Pete died in 2006, and Doris died in 2010.
