The collection contains the worship bulletin for the funeral service of Grover Cleveland Smith, journalist and former press secretary for Senator John Sparkman. Also included are photocopies of three obituary articles and four letters of condolence written to his widow, Sara Ruth Hoge Smith.

Biographical / Historical
Grover Cleveland Smith was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on December 24, 1922. He grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1942 and the University of Alabama in 1950, where he edited the Crimson White and the Rammer Jammer. Following high school he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and served during World War II and the Korean War. In 1950 he married Sara Ruth Hoge. The couple had three children: Mitchell, Mia, and Marqueta.
In 1955, he went to Washington, DC, where he worked as press secretary for Senator John Sparkman. Active in national and Alabama politics, Smith helped procure federal funding for the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway System during Lyndon Johnson's administration. After his retirement, Smith moved to Panama City, Florida. Smith died on January 7, 2004.
