Biographical / Historical
The building in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, known as the University Club was built in 1834 by James Dearing. It was purchased by Alabama governor Arthur P. Bagby who lived in the house from 1837 to 1841, when Tuscaloosa was the state capitol. At that time is was known as the Governor's Mansion. The building then passed through several families until World War II when it became the Tuscaloosa Service Center where thousands of servicemen were entertained during the war. In 1944, the University of Alabama acquired the building, which reopened after repairs and redecorating in 1946 as the University Club, a private dining club for faculty and staff.
