The collection consists of a ledger page describing the land selected by the commissioners appointed by the Governor of the State of Alabama, under Act of Congress approved April 23rd 1884, entitled an Act to increase the endowment of the University of Alabama.

Biographical / Historical
In 1880, the United States Congress granted the University of Alabama 40,000 acres of coal land. This grant was partial compensation for the $250,000 in war damages caused by the Union troops, under General John T. Croxton, burned much of the campus.
