Scope and Contents

The collection contains portions of a paper written by A. Edward Maumenee on the history of the University of Alabama Medical School with edits and corrections on retyped pages, his 1925 certificate from the American Board of Ophthalmic Examinations, and a letter from his son J. R. "Rob" Maumenee to A. E. "Ed" Maumenee, presumably A. Edward's sons as Rob refers to the handwriting on the papers about the UA Medical School as "Dad's".

Biographical / Historical

Alfred Edward Maumenee, son of Edward Alfred and Lula Martha Radcliff Maumenee, was born on September 19, 1913, in Mobile, Alabama. He was a noted ophthalmologist who pioneered treatments for retinal diseases, macular degeneration and glaucoma, and was a leading surgeon for corneal transplants and cataracts.

He received his AB degree from The University of Alabama and his MD from Cornell Medical College in 1938. He studied at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. He returned to Johns Hopkins as an associate professor after the war. In 1948, he went to Stanford Medical School to head the division of ophthalmology there. He returned to the Wilmer Eye Institute in 1955 as its director. He remained there until his retirement in 1979.

Maumenee married Anne Elizabeth Gunnis in 1949; this couple had two children: Anne Elizabeth and Alfred Edward III. After his wife's death, he married Irene Hussels in 1972; the couple had two children: Niels Kim and Nicholas Radcliff. They divorced sometime before 1991 when Maumenee returned to Mobile. There he met and married Sue Ballard around 1993. Maumenee died on January 18, 1998.
