Scope and Contents

This collection consists of letters and papers pertaining to various members of this large Hale County, Alabama, family. The letters are written by: Osmun Appling Wynne; his wife, Frances Laura Anderson Wynne; their children, William Appling, Martha, John, Laura, Elizabeth (Bettie), Thomas Osmun, and Julia; by the Wynne childrens' suitors, friends and spouses; and by Laura Wynne and Bestor Coleman's children and their friends. The collection also includes invoices and bills of William Appling, as well as photographs.

Three books included in the collection (Laura's Letters, Laura's and Her Children's Letters, and Laura's Family's Letters), are transcriptions of the letters center primarily around Laura and Bestor. All three books have been autographed by the author who also marked each letter with a code that corresponds to the letters that are in protective sleeves.

Biographical / Historical

Osmun Appling Wynne was born in Columbia County, Georgia, on 9 November 1804, to Williamson Wynne and Eleanor McGruder Wynne. He married Frances Laura Anderson on 26 January 1829, in Greene County, Georgia. They had six children: William Appling (b. 7 December 1832, d. 2 May 1869; never married); Martha Ann (b. 16 November 1834, d. October 1875; m. Dr. Lewis L. Sturdivant, 9 October 1860); John Williamson (b. 18 March 1837, d. 27 May 1867; m. Emma Chapman, 17 April 1867); Frances Laura (b. 28 August 1839, d. 18 March 1891; m. Bestor Coleman, 20 December 1859); Elizabeth Jane (b. 13 April 1842, d. 4 November 1867; m. Daniel J. Webster, 14 February 1865); Thomas Osmun (b. 23 December 1847, d. 1901; never married); and Julia Eoline (b. 13 February 1852, d. 23 August 1878; m. Dr. John E. Scott, 17 December 1875).
