Scope and Contents

The collection contains illustrated postcards addressed to George and Elizabeth Gorff in Ensley (Birmingham), Alabama, their two daughters, Gertrude and Margarete, and Elizabeth's family members who were residing with the Gorffs at the time. The postcards were from Elizabeth's mother, Sophia Krahenbuhl, and brothers, Thomas and Sam, as well as various family and friends from around the United States, Europe, and Panama, and provided news of daily life and activities.

Biographical / Historical

George Gorff was born in Alabama about 1875. He married Elizabeth Krahenbuhl who was born in 1878 in Tennessee. They had two daughters: Gertrude, born about 1902, and Margaret (Margarete), born about 1904.

Sophia Krahenbuhl was born in Switzerland in June of 1846 and immigrated to the United States in 1869. In 1900 she was a widow with six living children: Lizzie (Elizabeth Krahenbuhl); Thomas, born in 1879; Jackson, born in 1883; Samuel, born in 1885; John, born in 1887; and Sophia, born in 1893. They resided in Birmingham, Alabama.
