Scope and Contents

The H. C. Powell Papers contain materials related to Powell’s service during World War I and his service on the Board of Trustees of the Louisville (Kentucky) Free Public Library. The collection also contains a metal trench mirror; an Artillerymen's Manual; certificates from the National Guard; two bound notebooks containing Powell's handwritten notes; a World War I era military inspection pass; a certificate from the International Accounting Society; a letter from Powell to the Draft Board concerning compensation for the time he was in officer training school; a commemorative cigarette case from the Taylor Boulevard Community Club dated 1936; newspaper clippings; Powell's obituary; and a letter of condolence to Powell's widow from the Board of Trustees of the Louisville Free Public Library.

Biographical / Historical

Hubert Cecil Powell served in infantry and artillery units during World War I and was in officer training school when the war ended. He lived in Kentucky and worked for thirty-four years as a postal clerk before retiring in 1953. Powell served on the Board of Trustees of the Louisville Free Public Library for twenty-four years and passed away in 1978.
