Scope and Contents
The United States postal service railway mail service directories in this collection give a variety of information pertaining to the railway mail service, including stops listed by counties, train information, and post office separations. The maps cover several southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. There are also letters, postal rating exams, and a small group of papers on the Girl Reserve Clubs.

Biographical / Historical
Ernest O'Neal McElroy, son of Ernest Calvin and Alice Phillips McElroy, was born on May 1, 1917; he grew up in Cuba, Alabama. He met Dorothy Lorene Lacy in 1935 at a church function in Kewanee, Mississippi. They eloped six years later in 1940; their first son Sam O'Neal, was born the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. The couple had three more children: Ernest Lacy, Sherry, and Deborah.
After World War II, McElroy was a railway mail carrier and a rural preacher, first in Gulfport, Mississippi, and finally in Cuba, Alabama. He died on May 10, 2000, in Cuba.
