Scope and Contents
These three small ledgers, compiled by Dr. Charles Edward Ford of Roanoke, Alabama, from 1920-1952, lists Randolph County, Alabama, birth records. Entries are chronological and each gives the father's name, age, sex, and race, as well as the mother's name (presumably her maiden name as the parent's surnames are different in each entry), age, sex, and race. After the mother's information is the infant's name, sex, and race, with the time of birth. The last line of the entry is the place of birth (sometimes a postal route number is given also). Many of the earlier entries include the father's occupation. The last columns have some sort of code that might indicate the birth order and possibly the number of live siblings.
