Scope and Contents

The collection contains the daily journal of the Rev. James McClung Sieg, kept during his missionary trip to the Congo in 1907 and 1908. The first ninety-two pages were written while in, or traveling around in Africa. Most of the remaining pages include his time in England or at sea on his way home. The last seven pages of the journal were written in 1910 by his wife.

Biographical / Historical

James McClung Sieg, youngest son of Judge James M. and Frances Violet McClung Sieg, was born on 18 July 1873. He attended the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and was commissioned to go to Africa as a missionary in 1907. Sieg married Grace Alcott Sands of Richmond, on 25 February 1909, after his return to the States in June 1908. They returned to the Congo in 1910, but were back in Virginia before 1916 when their first child, Leroy, was born. Their second child, James E. was born sometime around 1918, also in Virginia. Sieg died on 2 October 1953.

Physical Description

Folio, 117 manuscript pages (plus blanks), front board detached and worn, first few signatures have chipping to edges of leaves, stiching loosening, several leaves unattached, lacks back strip, rear board worn as well. Other than the wear mentioned, the journal is in good condition, written in ink in a legible hand
