The Oak Leaf Stitchers, the Tuscaloosa, Alabama, chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild, flourished in Tuscaloosa in the 1970s and 1980s. The club: provided educational and cultural developement in the art of needlepoint for places of worship and historical landmarks; promoted the art of needlepoint through the study of its history, uses, and forms; and encouraged individual creativity in adapting its forms to modern uses.
Besides attending regular meetings, the members participated in several local festivals, including the West Alabama Camellia Festival. They also designed and stitched a five by eight foot rug for the children's room in the Battle-Friedman House (Tuscaloosa) featuring a variety of animals found in Alabama. There are twenty-eight squares, each sewn by a club member, surrounded by a needlepoint border.
The group disbanded in 1986 or 1987.
