Biographical / Historical

The Philomathic Society of The University of Alabama was formed in 1832, when a number of students saw the need for a literary society. The students declared their love of learning and devotion to virtue and their country by naming their new organization the Philomathic Society, with the motto - Pro Virtute et Patria. All records and archives of the Society were destroyed when the University was burned to the ground in April 1865 during the last days of the Civil War.
