Scope and Contents
The collection includes several items belonging to Dr. Frederick Hyde, a former University of Alabama music professor. Two photographs are included; one of a two women, and the other of a young woman and a baby. Also included are edited drafts of Dr. Hyde's dissertation, which were submitted to the Graduate School of Yale University in 1954. Additionally, the collection holds his Yale diploma. There are several pages of notes written by Dr. Hyde. One note of Dr. Hyde's is addressed to Sara and was written on the back of a music department faculty memo. Other notes are about composers, music, programs, lists, and a photocopy of hand drawn map to the Pine Valley Retirement Home. Twenty two correspondences written to Dr. Hyde from various friends are present also. These letters, postcards, telegrams, and cards wish him well on performances, holidays, hospital stays, and update him on their lives. The collection also includes a program from the Canterbury Chapel for Dr. Hyde's March 13, 2001 funeral service. In addition, several newspaper articles are in the collection. One newspaper section from The Tuscaloosa News features Dr. Hyde and his "unusual home." Several other clippings make up Dr. Hyde's obituary, a clipping of a letter to the editor written by Dr. Hyde, a photocopy of a piece about Margaret Christy's retirement years, and several Dear Abby articles. In addition, there are numerous copies of sheet music and miscellaneous items.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Frederick Bill Hyde was a former University of Alabama music professor. He was born May 23, 1908, and attended Harvard and Yale for music studies. He graduated from Yale with his Ph.D. in 1954. He started teaching at the University of Alabama's School of Music in 1949, and became a full professor in 1959. He played several instruments, including the viola, organ, and harpsichord. He was Canterbury Chapel's organist and choir director for over 30 years. He belonged to the American Musicology Society, Renaissance Society, and the American Guild of Organists. He won the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award, as well as having the Frederick B. Hyde Harpsichord Room dedicated to him at the University of Alabama. He died March 7, 2001 at the age of 92. His funeral service was held March 13, 2001 at the Canterbury Chapel in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
