Scope and Contents
This collection contains four volumes of work submitted by students enrolled in the Blount Program's seminar "Marking Graves: Self and Society in Death" and ANT 444/544 "Anthropology and Cemeteries" at the University of Alabama. The courses were taught by Ian W. Brown who edited the volumes from 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005. Research was conducted in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The object of the 2001, 2002, and 2004 classes was to examine how individuals and society are reflected in burial practices. 2005 saw a shift in focus as the class examined the differences between Anglo-American and African-American graveyards. The papers may examine burial patterns, customs, ornamentation, or simply be lists of interments.
