Biographical / Historical

West Alabama AIDS Outreach (WAAO) is a nonprofit agency committed to educating the community about HIV/AIDS and providing services for those affected by this disease. WAAO provides services to Tuscaloosa, Lamar, Fayette, Bibb, Pickens, Greene, Hale, Walker, Perry and Sumter counties in West Alabama.

In the late 1980s, grassroots organization members shared concerns for people who had died or were dying from the disease, their need for care, and the consequences of the AIDS stigma. WAAO incorporated as a nonprofit agency in 1989 and since that time has provided services such as case management for affected individuals, prevention education as well as working diligently to stop the spread of HIV in West Alabama.
