Biographical / Historical

The marriage of Alexander Perry Hogan and Caroline Elizabeth Snow in 1857 joined two prominent Tuscaloosa families. A. P. Hogan attended the University of Alabama in one of the first classes and opened a business in the city, Hogan and Cobbs Mercantile. After the Civil War, he moved the family north to Ohio, but in 1895, they returned to Tuscaloosa, where A. P. opened an insurance business and worked as a city clerk and tax collector.

Caroline, the daughter of Henry A. and Abby Hazard Snow, was a highly respected woman in Tuscaloosa society. She had two daughters with A. P. Hogan, Abby Hazard and Mazie, who never married. Mazie stayed in Tuscaloosa and taught in the city’s public schools, and for a time, she ran her own school. Abby moved to Texas but later in life returned to Tuscaloosa.

A. P.’s sister, Mary S. Hogan, was a talented musician. She moved to Birmingham and taught music in the public schools.
