Scope and Contents

Box 17 includes incoming correspondence to John S. Bickley from prominent United States and world leaders and their representatives. Some of these correspondents have a relationship with Dr. Bickley (including Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson), whereas others provided items for his autograph collection. Notable items included in the collection other than correspondence include an autographed photograph of James B. Allen, United States Senator from Alabama, and an invitation to a Texas welcome dinner that was to be held in honor of President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson on November 22, 1963, the day that President Kennedy was assassinated.

The remainder of the boxes include unprocessed materials created and kept by Bickley. They contain both personal materials and those relating to the International Insurance Society.

Biographical / Historical

John S. Bickley was a prominent insurance professional who held teaching positions at The University of Alabama, The University of Wisconsin, The University of Washington, Ohio State University, and Stanford University, in addition to other institutions. Dr. Bickley received his BA (1939), MBA (1947), and PhD (1950) from The University of Wisconsin. Some of Dr. Bickley’s professional affiliations are with the following organizations: The Insurance Hall of Fame; The International Insurance Society, Inc.; The Columbus Life Insurance Company; and The Griffith Foundation for Insurance Education. Professional recognitions bestowed upon Dr. Bickley include a nomination to be the first editor of the Journal of Insurance, presidency of the American Risk and Insurance Association, and the first Chairmanship of the Committee on Property and Liability Insurance Terminology. Dr. Bickley was married to Mary Louise Loftis. His daughter Mary Naismith is the executive director of the International Insurance Society, Inc. Dr. Bickley died in Tuscaloosa on October 12, 2008.
