Biographical / Historical

Edward Bressie Vaughan, Jr. was born on 10 December 1840 in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, to Edward B. and Maria Vaughan. He graduated from The University of Alabama in July 1861 and entered the Confederate Army in August of the same year as a first lieutenant in Captain N.N. Clements' company (Tuscaloosa, Alabama).

After the Battle of Shiloh (6-7 April 1862), Vuaghan was elected Captain of the consolidated companies of Captains Long and John Clements of Tuscaloosa and Walker Counties, which were part of the then 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Gladden's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. (When it was discovered that there was already a 26th Alabama Regiment, the Tuscaloosa/Walker Counties 26th Alabama was renamed the 50th Alabama and is frequently refered to as the 26th-50th Alabama Infantry Regiment.) Ha participated in all of the battles and was wounded in the battle of Atlanta on 22 July 1864. At the battle of Franklin, Tennessee (30 November 1864), the 26th-50th was severly mauled by Union forces.

While the Union forces had been forced to withdraw, the Confederate "victory" had come at a frightful cost. More men of the Army of Tennessee were killed in five hours at Franklin than in two days at the Battle of Shiloh. The Confederates suffered 6,252 casualties, including 1,750 killed and 3,800 wounded. An estimated 2,000 others suffered less serious wounds and returned to duty before the Battle of Nashville. Their military leadership in the West was decimated, including the loss of skilled general Patrick Cleburne. Fifteen Confederate generals (6 killed or mortally wounded, 8 wounded, and 1 captured) and 53 regimental commanders were casualties. What was left of the 26th-50th Alabama Regiment proceeded to the Carolinas, and it was at Kinston that a line of skirmishers, 40 to 60 strong, principally from the 26th-50th, under Captain Vaughan, captured a stand of colors and 300 men of the 15th Connecticut.

After the war, Vaughan returned to Alabama and engaged in the lumber and timber industries in Mobile. In 1865 he married Mary S. Jones of Kemper County, Mississippi, a niece of General E.W. Pettus. Later he married Mary E. Hale, daughter of Colonel Stephen F. Hale.

Custodial History

The Edward Bressie Vaghan Papers were originally part of the Robert Jemison, Jr. Papers, which also contained papers of Andrew Coleman Hargrove, Hargrove's son-in-law, Adrian Sebastian Van de Graaff, and the papers of Edward Bressie Vaughan, Sr. and Jr., possibly relations of Hargrove's. The papers were acquired by the University of Alabama in 19??. At an early date, some of Hargrove's ledgers, a scrapbook and his letterbooks were separated from the original donation of the papers and designated as the Andrew Coleman Hargrove Papers, though most of his business records remained with the Jemison papers. In 1996, the remaining Hargrove material was removed from the Jemison Papers and consolidated with the Hargrove Papers. The letterbooks and other papers of Adrian S. Van de Graaff and E.B. Vaughan were also separated from the Jemison Papers and designated the Adrian Sebastian Van de Graaff Papers and Edward Bressie Vaughan Papers, respectively.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of the Van de Graaff family after the death of Minnie Cherokee Van de Graaff.
