Biographical / Historical

The John Fraser Ramsey Award was created in honor of Dr. John Fraser Ramsey. He was a history professor at the University of Alabama for 42 years. After his retirement in 1977, two separate groups led by his former doctoral student, Dr. David Vess, and Warren Herlong, one of his closest friends, wanted to honor him, creating the first University-wide endowed fund. The first recipient of the Ramsey Award was Blalock in May 1978. He was born December 17, 1907, in Lawrence, Kansas. His family moved to California when he was the age of 8. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a major in European history and a minor in political science in 1931, followed by a master’s degree in history in 1932. In 1935 he received his Ph.D. in modern European history from the University of California at Berkley. He started as a history instructor at the University of Alabama in 1935. He took three years off from teaching, during World War II, served as civilian head of the Department of Maps and Charts, Santa Anna Army Air Base from 1942-1943; Assistant Coordinator of War Training Programs, Washington State University from 1943 – 1944; and Senior Historian for Air Staff Intelligence at the Pentagon from 1944- 1945. After World War II, he came back to the University of Alabama. He got promoted to full professor in 1947, where he remained until his retirement in 1977. During his tenure at the University of Alabama, he was a recipient of many distinguished University of Alabama awards, including the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award for service to the University and the Carlton K. Butler Award for service to the University. He passed away on January 29, 1983.
