Biographical/Historical note
Frederick D. Smith (1917-2001) was born in Kansas. During World War Two he joined the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American pilots. After the war he attended Hastings College of the Law. He became the first African American attorney for the San Francisco's Public Defenders Office. In 1974 he became Chief Attorney under Public Defender, Robert Nico.
