Biographical / Historical
John Murphy was born circa 1785 and attended school in South Carolina. After his graduation he was elected clerk of the South Carolina Senate where he clerked and studied law. In 1818 he moved to Alabama and became a planter in Monroe County. He immediately entered Alabama politics and was a delegate to the 1819 Constitutional Convention. He was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1820 and to the Alabama Senate in 1822. He ran for governor in 1824 unopposed and served two terms (from 1825 to 1829). After leaving the governor’s office he returned to his plantation until he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1833. In 1839 he retired once more to his plantation where he died in 1841.
