Scope and Contents

This collection mainly includes letters written by Peter Swereda to his family in New Jersey. The collection also includes a smaller number of letters written by Peter’s wife, Rose, to Peter’s sister, Ann. The letters were written and sent from US Army Air Force training sites in Tennessee and Alabama, with most originating from the Maxwell Army Air Force Base in Alabama.

Biographical / Historical

Peter Swereda, originally from Paterson, New Jersey, was a bomber pilot in the Pacific theater of the Second World War. While training for his duty in the Pacific, Peter was based at facilities in Tennessee and Alabama. Following his training in Alabama, Peter moved on to Lincoln, Nebraska, for more training before participating in the invasion of Okinawa.
