Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a single bound ledger, into which several memoranda, receipts, and other items have been interleaved. The ledger itself covers the years 1927-1951, although the entries are not continuous. The opening portion of the ledger (pp. 2-75) appears to list the names of chapter members and the dues they paid from the late 1920s through the late 1930s. following which there is a gap until 1943, and thereafter intermittent entries for the late 1940s through 1951. There are also meeting minutes for two meetings in 1952 (pp. 76-77), a list of chapter committees for 1947-48 (p. 116), meeting minutes for 1927-40 (pp. 117-267), 7 August 1944 (p. 268), and 1945-51 (pp. 269-341). The remainder of the ledger's pages are blank, save the final few (pp. 461-468) and the end pages, which contain a miscellany of lists of dues collected, committee members, and etc. A few otherwise blank pages also contain mathematical sums. The binding is in poor condition, and the front cover and spine are loose.

Biographical / Historical
The Order of the Eastern Star is, to quote one of the organization's webpages (http://generalgrand.homestead.com/index.html, accessed 18 December 2006), "a Masonically-related fraternity of women and men dedicated to charity, truth and loving kindness. Although not a part of the Masonic fraternity, membership is based on a Masonic affiliation or relationship, a belief in God, and a desire to acquire additional knowledge and for self improvement." The Equity Lodge Number 29 of the Order of the Eastern Star of Alabama, appears from internal evidence in this item to have been situated in the Coffee County town of Elba, in southeastern Alabama. This cannot, however, be confirmed by external evidence, since, according to the Alabama Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star website, which contains a list of Lodges (http://members.aol.com/alaoes/chapters.htm, accessed 18 December 2006) Lodge Number 29 is now named "Palmer" and is located in the Butler County community of Georgiana, in south central Alabama.
