Scope and Contents
The collection consists of twenty-three industrial photographs depicting foundries in Alabama. The foundries depicted in this collection are in Birmingham (Sloss, Thomas, Alice, Marry Pratt, Trusville and Woodward), Ensley, Sheffield (Lady Ensley), Anniston (Pipe and Woodstock), Bessemer (DeBardeleben), and Woodward, Alabama in 1889. Photographer from Birmingham, Alabama, John Horgan, Jr. took the photos for Truman H. Aldrich and presented them to him in June 1889.

Biographical / Historical
John Horgan, Jr. was a photographer who operated a business in Birmingham, Alabama, from 1888 through 1892. He had solid connections with the iron industry in Pennsylvania and New York, where he had photographic studios (Rochester, New York 1897, and Johnstown, Pennsylvania 1885). In years Horgan spent in Alabama he made industrial photographs for the Chamber of Commerce, railroad and land companies, a trade magazine, and government agencies. He returned to the northeast after 1892 fire at his Alabama studio.
