Scope and Contents

The collection contains material relating to Standish’s personal life, materials used as a creative writing teacher, and awards and honors received for her work as a writer. In addition, there is material related to Standish’s work as a songwriter, including recordings of her songs.

The bulk of the collection contains her published writings. Although she is known as a poet, Standish has published a wide range of works, including short stories, editorials, and newspapers columns. This collection contains clippings and individual articles from journals and newspapers as well as entire works in which her articles or poems appeared.

The materials in the collection are arranged into these series: Correspondence, Personal, Honors and Awards, Organizations, Songwriting, Published Poems and Other Writings, and Miscellaneous and Unprocessed Materials.

Biographical / Historical

Lorraine Repetta was born June 19, 1937, in Boston, Massachusetts, the second child of Harold and Lucille Repetta, both natives of Massachusetts. The couple divorced when Lorraine was two years old.

When she was sixteen years old, Lorraine Repetta met Myles Standish in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Originally from Arkansas, Standish was serving the in U.S. Navy and was stationed at Newport, Rhode Island. At the age of seventeen, Lorraine left high school and married Standish in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on December 6, 1954.

The couple moved to Arkansas where Myles attended the University of Arkansas, where he graduated with a BS in Engineering in 1958. Lorraine completed beauty school in Arkansas. Upon graduating from the University of Arkansas, Myles accepted a position at NASA in Huntsville, Alabama. During the next two years the couple had two children, Renee (1958-2006) and Linda (1960-2005).

Throughout Myles's career as an aerospace engineer, Lorraine worked as a free-lance writer and taught at several elementary schools. She is a published poet. Lorraine and Myles lived in Huntsville until 1981 when Myles retired from NASA. They then moved to Lillian, Alabama, where they lived until Myles' death in April 2015.
