Biographical / Historical
Born in Connecticut, Langdon moved to Marion, Perry County, Alabama, with his brother in 1825. He subsequently settled in Mobile in 1834, where he was a commission merchant with Martin A. Lee. He also edited the Advertiser, a Whig newspaper. Unsuccessful as candidate for the Alabama legislature several times, he was elected mayor of the city of Mobile in 1849 and served, except one year until 1855. He subsequently served in the state legislature 1855-1856 and 1862, and was a member of the Alabama state constitutional conventions of 1865 and 1875. He was an unsuccessful candidate for governor 1872 and 1878, but was Alabama Secretary of State 1885-1889. Langdon was interested in agriculture and served as a trustee of the Agriculture and Mechanical college, later Auburn University.
