The Wynn Family Papers consists of items covering at least three generations. They include the legal and financial papers of John Henry Irby Wynn (1787-1854); diaries, correspondence, legal and financial papers of his son, Alexander Montgomery Wynn (1823-1897); correspondence and financial papers of Martha Curtis Wynn (Mrs. Alexander Montgomery Wynn) (1826-1907); and the legal and financial papers of J.H.I. Wynn's grandson, John Robert Wynn, c. 1860-1896.

Biographical/Historical note
John Henry Irby Wynn, farmer and teacher, was born on 14 June 1797, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, the son of Robert Wynn of Virginia and a descendant of Sir William Wynn of England. He moved to Alabama and settled in Limestone County, where he was a farmer and a teacher. He represented Limestone County in the State Legislature for many years.
He married Francis M. Brownley on 25 December 1821, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. They had eleven children: Alexander Montgomery (1823-1897); Robert W., died in Mississippi; Mary H. E. (?-1850), married Mr. Craig; Cornelia (?-1866); Sarah M. (?-1871), married Frank White of Louisiana; John F.; Francis M. (?-1848); Henry J., Confederate solider, was killed in a skirmish near the Rapidan River, in Virginia, 1863; Virginia Cain; Octavia C. (?-1873), married Mr. Edwards, died in Louisiana; Eugenia Ellen, married Mr. Edwards, Alexandria, Louisiana. John Henry Irby Wynn died on 2 January 1854 in Limestone County.
Alexander Montgomery Wynn, was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, on 26 March 1823, and died on 16 November 1897, in Madison County, Alabama. He married Martha Curtis Ward on 28 May 1857. Martha Curtis Ward was born in Madison County, Alabama, on 8 November 1826, and died there on 15 March 1908. The couple had six children: Sarah Francis, born in Poincutt County, Arkansas, 24 April 1858. married Joseph T. Wilson in 1883, died in Huntsville, Alabama, September 1942; Mary Jane, married J. Rowe Jones, Huntsville, Alabama, and died in December 1953; Martha Ellen (?-1918) married John L. Yancey, of Birmingham, Alabama; John Robert (?-1896) married Laura Lanier; Lillian (?-1952) married Archie McDonnell; and Alex M. (?-1896).

An extensive collection of correspondence, diaries and legal and financial papers relating to John Henry Irby Wynn (1787-1854), teacher and farmer in Limestone County, Alabama, and his son Alexander Montgomery (1823-1897), daughter-in-law Martha (Curtis) Wynn (1826-1907), and grandson John Robert Wynn (ca. 1860-1896). The diaries include accounts of Alexander Wynn's trip to Arkansas in the 1850s.
