Scope and Contents
This collection contains letters and notes about an 1848 trip to the Alabama coal fields; scrapbooks of newspaper articles about Indian languages, the early history of Tuscaloosa and Alabama; the University of Alabama's history, and copies of newspaper clippings from the Choctaw language paper "The Vindicator", published 1875 in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The collection contains an article or speech text titled "The Beginning of Tuscaloosa and Newtown."

Biographical/Historical note
Wyman was born Nov. 23, 1830 in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Justus and Mary Amelia Stokes Wyman. He attended Harvard University, but graduated at Alabama in 1851. William Stokes Wyman was a professor of Latin and Greek (1855-1908), historian, and University librarian, and President (1901-1902) of the University of Alabama. Wyman, son of Justus and Mary Amelia Stokes Wyman, was born on November 23, 1830, in Montgomery, Alabama. He received his AB degree in 1851 and AM in 1853 from The University of Alabama, and his LLD in 1882, also from The University of Alabama. He joined the faculty and remained there until 1902. He married Melissa A. Dearing of Tuscaloosa in December 29, 1853. The couple had four children: (1) Benjamin Leon; (2) William Stokes; (3) Charles Augustus; and (4) Alice Searcy. Wyman died on Octber 20, 1915.
