A letter dated 14 January 1877, to Charles W. Hanler, asking that a brochure be sent to him. At the time Woods was a judge on the United States fifth district court, of which Alabama was a part.

Biographical / Historical
Ohio legislator and brigadier-general, Woods settled in Alabama in 1866. He served two years as state chancellor and in 1870 was appointed circuit judge of the United States for the fifth circuit, based in Mobile. Ten years later he was appointed associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
