Scope and Contents
The collection contains records of conference meetings of Methodist Women in Missions, North Alabama Conference, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This collection consists of five papers: “Charter Member of United Methodist Women” written in 1973; Centennial Celebration to the UMW; “Some Firsts of the First Century in Mission, 1879 – 1979”; the script of the slide presentations at the Centennial Celebration; and “Memories...Dreams” written in 1979.

The Tuscaloosa District Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society was formed on November 30, 1879, at the same time the Conference Society was organized. Mrs. Adaline H. Harrison was elected Conference Vice President in charge of the Tuscaloosa district, a post she held for seven years. Only three other districts were named at the Conference Organizational Meeting. The first Tuscaloosa District Meeting was held at Woodstock in 1908. Four Adult and five Juvenile Societies were reported with 181 members.
