Biographical / Historical

Baptist church at Sweetwater, Alabama, established 1839.On February 10, 1839 the Union Baptist Church was established with 13 members. The building was located in Sweetwater, Marengo County, Alabama, on the Nanafalia and Clifton road about one mile east from Sweet Water Creek, and one mile west from the present Exmoore. On January 1, 1862, the Union Baptist Church was reconstituted, and the original church lot was enlarged by adding two acres of land, which were donated by Napoleon Bates and his wife Mary E. Bates. The Union Baptist Church was dissolved after August 2, 1874. This collection contains two record books of the Union Baptist Church. Both of the books end in 1874, but the first one begins in 1839 and the second one begins in 1852. They include a church history, church record book index, meeting minutes, constitution of the church, a lineage chart of Brenda Englebert, plot map of Marengo County, a church index, and a member index. The Englebert papers in this collection were completed in 1992.
