Scope and Contents

The collection contains four letters. The first, dated 8 November 1834, to Harvey Chase of Fall River, Massachusetts, by J. B. Toulmin of the commission firm Toulmin, Hazard and Company of Mobile, Alabama, included market news and discusses selling cotton to Chase (it is written on a printed market report of the firm dated November 5). The second, dated 8 December 1834, to Abraham Bell and Company of New York, discusses business matters, particularly cotton shipments. The third letter, dated 23 November 1835, also to Abraham Bell and Company discussing cotton sales and shipping. The fourth letter, dated 22 April 1837, to Abraham Bell and Company and discusses the accounts between the two. This letter is written on a copy of the Mobile Shipping and Commerical List, which was published weekly from 1833 to 1839 by the Commerical Register and Patriot, and documented the imports and exports of raw materials, retail and wholesale prices on goods, and other important trading information.
