Scope and Contents
This collection contains deeds to lands owned by the family, account books from the Tillery's store, personal financial statements of family members, and settlements from estates. Also included are papers pertaining to the Fairfax Cotton Mill, the family Bible, containing enclosures on the deaths of Mark Tillery and his wife Clara Boyles Tillery, and various family photographs (c. 1940-1995).

Biographical / Historical
E. J. Tillery settled in Tallapoosa County, Alabama in the middle of the nineteenth century, and eventually purchased land around Opelika, in Lee County. His son, T. J. [Thomas Jefferson (1861-1929)] married Mary Ida Floyd (1861-1931) on January 25, 1883. The couple had six children: (1) Mary Effie; (2) Herbert "Bert"; (3) Charles Floyd; (4) Mark; (5) Clay; and (6) Lee.
The children scattered from the homestead in east Alabama to Georgia, Florida, and Michigan, and worked in variety of fields from education to the cotton industry.
Mary Effie (1886-1931) married Oscar L. Bradshaw of Fitzgerald, Georgia in 1917.
Bert (b. 1888) first married Eloise Pollock in 1916 and then Bea in 1932.
There is no information indicating that Charles Floyd (1890-1971) ever married.
Mark (1895-?) married Clara Boyles. The two were involved in some gambling fueds in Detroit and according to the newspaper reports, Mark, in a morphine-induced frenzy, killed Clara and then committed suicide for fear of gang retailiation for some previous criminal activity.
Clay (b. 1900) married Olive Bass in 1934.
Lee (b. 1902) married Joe (Jo) Carpenter in 1935. The couple had one daughter, Nicketti.
Mary Ida's parents were Charles Jefferson Floyd (1814-1886) and Mary Ann (1831-1894).
Nicketti Tillery married Robert Faucett Gibbons; they had one daughter, JoLee Gibbons.
