The John F. Thompson collection consists of mainly of correspondence concerning the Alabama Militia 1836-1839, and records of the 14th Brigade, Alabama Militia, 1837-1839. The militia records contain regimental returns (primarily 32nd Regiment) and election tally, court material, and a list of delinquents and defaulters.

Not much is known about John F. Thompson except that he was Brigadier General of the 14th Brigade of the Alabama Militia. He lived in Marion, Perry County, Alabama from at least 1836-1850. (He is listed in the 1850 census.)
