Biographical/Historical note
John C. Duckworth (who evidently donated these documents to the Special Collections) was a staff officer in a US Army unit operating in the southen Philippines at the end of World War II. Upon learning of the Japanese government's capitulation, the commanding general of the 35th Japanese Army asked to surrender to Duckworth's unit. Duckworth's commanding officer insisted on a formal surrender. Duckworth therefore had a staff member who was an attorney in civilian life draw up surrender documents in English and Japanese, of which several copies were made and signed, including one kept by Duckworth himself. These are his copies.
