Biographical / Historical

Tuscaloosa educator and proprietress of the Alabama Female Institute (Stafford School). She was educated in New Hampshire and came to Tuscaloosa in 1834 to teach. She married Samuel Stafford, professor of ancient languages at the University of Alabama, 1837-1856. Incapacitated by ill health, he purchased a majority interest in the Alabama Female Institute, which he and Maria ran until the early 1870s. The school was often known as the Stafford School. Their children were Belle, Alice, and Fred.
