Biographical/Historical note
The James "Horseshoe" Robertson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution was organized on May 11, 1947 in the recreation room of Christ Episcopal Church, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, through the efforts of Colonel William T. Carpenter of Tuscaloosa, at the request of Mr. Files Crenshaw of Montgomery, Alabama, President of the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. The chapter began with a nucleus of eight men living in the Tuscaloosa area who were at-large members of the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. The chapter had eighteen charter members. James (Horseshoe) Robertson was adopted as the chapter’s name, thus commemorating a South Carolina scout and ranger during the Revolutionary War who subsequently settled in Tuscaloosa County.
