Biographical/Historical note

O. M. Roberts was born in South Carolina on July 9, 1815. He entered the University of Alabama in 1833 and graduated in 1836. He may have served as librarian for the University. He passed the bar exam in 1837 and lived in Alabama until 1841. While living in Alabama he served in the Alabama legislature for one term. In 1841 he moved to San Augustine, Texas where he practiced law and served as district attorney and as a justice of the Texas Supreme Court. He served as president of the Texas Secession Convention in 1861 and later commanded a Confederate States Army unit that fought in the Civil War. After the war he continued his political career, serving as Governor of Texas, 1879-1883. After serving as governor he taught law at the University of Texas, an institution he helped found. In addition, he was a founding member and the first president of the Texas Historical Association.
