Biographical/Historical note
Lawyer and jurist, he was born December 28, 1844, at Louisville, Barbour County, Alabama. Lee served in the Civil War and was captured at Spanish Fort. Postwar he studied law under D. M. Seales at Clayton, Alabama, and began practicing law in 1867. He served as mayor of Clayton, solicitor for Barbour County, solicitor for the eighth judicial district, and associate judge of the city court of Gadsden. He was also a trustee of the University of Alabama. He married Lillie Lawrence on December 19, 1865. They had six children: Lawrence Haywood, Vela, William Lovard, Charles W., Henry Fitzhugh, and Alto Vela Jr.
